A cooling system that has run through fifteen or more humid summers is in different territory than one that is eight years old. Older equipment has worn compressor windings, tired contactors and coils that have been through a lot of condensate. That said, we have repaired plenty of older units that had one clear fault and years of life left, and we have replaced younger ones that were installed badly from day one. Age matters most when it stacks with other things: a second or third failure in a couple of seasons, a coil that leaks in more than one spot, or a unit that has never cooled the house properly. On its own, a number on the data plate is not a verdict.
The Type of Fault Changes Everything
Some failures are straightforward. A capacitor, a contactor, a blower motor, a condensate pump, a bad low-voltage wire in a crawlspace, a clogged drain line backing up onto the floor. Those are AC repair jobs and we do them all day. The harder conversation starts with the sealed refrigerant system. A compressor that has failed electrically, an evaporator coil leaking in several places, or a system that has lost its charge more than once without a findable cause. Those repairs reach deep into the equipment and often sit next to other parts that are equally worn. When the fault is in the sealed system on an older unit, replacement usually deserves a serious look.
Parts Availability And Matching The Rest Of The System
We can only repair what we can get parts for. Some older models have coils and compressors that are discontinued or backordered for weeks, which means you sit through a humid stretch with no cooling. Refrigerant type matters too. Systems built for older refrigerants get harder and costlier to service as supply tightens, and we will tell you plainly when that is the case. Matching is the other piece. If your outdoor unit fails and the indoor coil and air handler are from a different era, dropping in a new condenser alone can leave you with a mismatched pair that never performs right. Sometimes replacing the pair is the honest answer.

Is it worth repairing an air conditioner that is over ten years old?
Often yes, if the fault is a common part like a capacitor, contactor or blower motor. The calculation shifts when the failure is in the sealed refrigerant system or when the same unit has needed repeated air conditioner repair visits.
My AC needs refrigerant every summer. Is that normal?
No. Refrigerant is not consumed, so if a system needs it repeatedly there is a leak somewhere. We look for it. If it is in the evaporator coil or in several spots, replacement usually makes more sense than chasing it.
Can I replace just the outdoor unit?
