What an emergency no-heat call involves
We start with the symptom you are living with. Does the blower run without warm air, does the furnace start and quit after a minute, or is nothing happening at all? Each of those points down a different path. We confirm the thermostat is calling for heat, check that the furnace has power and gas supply, and read the control board diagnostics. From there we test the specific component that failed rather than guessing. Most no-heat calls come down to ignition, a safety switch doing its job, or airflow that has been choked off.
What we check and what we replace
Common failures we find on a no-heat call include a cracked hot surface igniter, a flame sensor coated enough that it can no longer prove flame, a failed inducer motor, a bad pressure switch, or a blower capacitor that has given up. We also look at condensate drains, because a backed-up drain on a high-efficiency furnace will lock the unit out. In older homes with ducts running through vented crawlspaces, we check for disconnected trunk lines and heavy filter restriction that trips the limit switch repeatedly.
How we decide it is a repair, not a replacement
We tell you what the part costs to fix, how old the furnace is, and whether the heat exchanger is sound. A twelve-year-old furnace with a bad igniter is worth repairing that night. A furnace with a cracked heat exchanger gets shut down, because that is a combustion safety issue and no repair makes it safe again. My furnace runs but the air coming out is cold. Is that an emergency?
It can be. A furnace that blows unheated air is often failing to light or shutting down on a safety while the blower keeps running. Check your filter, then call us so the lockout code gets read.
Should I use space heaters until you arrive?
One or two portable electric heaters in occupied rooms are reasonable if you follow the manufacturer instructions and keep them clear of fabric. Never use a stove, grill or unvented combustion heater indoors for warmth.
What if the furnace shut off and I smell gas?
Get everyone out of the house first. Do not flip switches or use the thermostat. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility, let them make the property safe, then call us to repair the furnace.
