What the job actually involves
A capacitor is the part that gives a motor the push it needs to start and the steady load it needs to keep spinning. When it weakens, motors draw too much current and overheat. We shut down power, discharge and test the capacitor, then read the motor's amp draw against its rating. If the capacitor is the only failure, that is a straightforward swap. If the motor windings are burnt or the bearings have seized, the motor comes out and a matched replacement goes in, wired to the same specification.
What we check and install
We start with the whole starting circuit rather than one part, because a bad contactor or a shorted motor will kill a new capacitor within weeks. That means checking the contactor, wiring connections, the fan blade and mounting, and the condenser coil for restricted airflow. Blower motors get the same treatment inside the air handler, including the wheel and housing. Around here, ducts and equipment often sit in vented crawlspaces, so we look at moisture and corrosion on the motor housing while we are in there.
How we decide it is the right call
We measure before we recommend. A capacitor reading well below its rated microfarads gets replaced. A motor pulling high amps, running hot, or turning rough by hand gets replaced. If the numbers are fine, the fault is somewhere else and we keep looking rather than throwing parts at it. Age and condition matter too. On a system with a failing compressor or heavy coil corrosion, we will say so plainly and lay out repair against replacement so you can decide.

Can I just replace the capacitor and leave the motor?
Often yes, if the motor tests within its rated amp draw and spins freely. When the motor is already damaged, a new capacitor fails again quickly, so we test both before recommending anything.
Why did my capacitor fail in the first place?
Heat and run time are the main causes. Long humid summers, a dirty condenser coil, low airflow or a worn contactor all push a capacitor harder than it was designed for.
How long does the replacement take?
A capacitor swap is usually done in one visit, often under an hour once testing is complete. Fan motors depend on access and whether we have a matched motor on the truck for your unit.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the form and describe what changed. Warm air, short cycling, a smell, water near the indoor unit. Details like that help us load the right parts before we leave.
- Step 2
We diagnose the whole system
We check the thermostat, the indoor unit, the outdoor unit and the ductwork, including runs in crawlspaces where damp air and loose joints quietly cause weak airflow and long run times.
- Step 3
You approve the fix
We explain what failed, what it takes to repair it, and what we would watch next season. Nothing gets replaced without your yes, and we clean up before we leave.

Why homeowners call us
- Humidity is our home groundMuggy summers and damp shoulder seasons drive most of the calls we take. We look at moisture and airflow together, not the cooling number alone, because a clammy house often means a sizing or duct problem.
- Crawlspace ducts get checkedOlder homes across the region run supply ducts through vented crawlspaces. Crushed flex, disconnected boots and soaked insulation show up constantly, and we get under the house to look instead of guessing from the register.
- Heating and cooling bothSame crew for air conditioning repair in July and heating repair in January. We know how your furnace, heat pump and air handler share ducts and a blower, so one visit covers the whole system.
- Plain talk on repair or replaceWhen a repair makes sense, we repair it. When a system is failing in ways that will keep costing you, we say so and explain why, then leave the decision with you and your timeline.

- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
