What a defrost cycle repair involves
A heat pump in heating mode runs its outdoor coil colder than the outside air, so frost forms. The control is supposed to sense that, reverse the refrigerant flow for a few minutes, melt the ice off and go back to heating. When that sequence fails you get either a solid block of ice or a system that defrosts far too often. We watch the unit through a full cycle, read what the board is calling for and find where the sequence breaks down. Most of it is diagnosis time, not parts.
What we check
We start with airflow and the obvious physical causes, because a coil packed with leaves, a blocked bottom pan or a unit sitting where gutter runoff drips on it will ice up no matter how good the electronics are. Then we test the defrost board, the coil sensor or thermostat, the reversing valve and its solenoid, the outdoor fan and the contactor. We check refrigerant charge and the indoor filter and coil, since low airflow indoors shows up as strange outdoor behavior. Damp shoulder-season weather makes all of it worse.
How we decide it is the right call
If the coil clears on its own and the house holds temperature, we may be looking at normal winter frost and nothing more. We call it a defrost problem when the ice keeps returning, when the timer strip is stuck, when the sensor reads wrong against our own measurement or when the reversing valve will not shift. If the board is failed we replace the board. If the compressor has already been running under ice for weeks, we tell you honestly what that means for the rest of the system.

Is some frost on my heat pump normal?
Yes. A light coat of frost in cold damp weather is normal and should melt off during a defrost cycle. A thick shell of ice covering the coil and fan, or ice that never clears, is not.
Why does my heat pump blow cold air for a few minutes?
That is usually the defrost cycle reversing refrigerant flow to melt the outdoor coil. Electric heat strips should cover the house during it. If it happens constantly, the control or sensor needs testing.
Can I pour hot water on the ice?
We would rather you did not. Water refreezes in the base pan and blocks the drain, and you cannot see what you are soaking. Switch to emergency heat, shut the unit down and call us.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the form and describe what changed. Warm air, short cycling, a smell, water near the indoor unit. Details like that help us load the right parts before we leave.
- Step 2
We diagnose the whole system
We check the thermostat, the indoor unit, the outdoor unit and the ductwork, including runs in crawlspaces where damp air and loose joints quietly cause weak airflow and long run times.
- Step 3
You approve the fix
We explain what failed, what it takes to repair it, and what we would watch next season. Nothing gets replaced without your yes, and we clean up before we leave.

Why homeowners call us
- Humidity is our home groundMuggy summers and damp shoulder seasons drive most of the calls we take. We look at moisture and airflow together, not the cooling number alone, because a clammy house often means a sizing or duct problem.
- Crawlspace ducts get checkedOlder homes across the region run supply ducts through vented crawlspaces. Crushed flex, disconnected boots and soaked insulation show up constantly, and we get under the house to look instead of guessing from the register.
- Heating and cooling bothSame crew for air conditioning repair in July and heating repair in January. We know how your furnace, heat pump and air handler share ducts and a blower, so one visit covers the whole system.
- Plain talk on repair or replaceWhen a repair makes sense, we repair it. When a system is failing in ways that will keep costing you, we say so and explain why, then leave the decision with you and your timeline.
- All major brands, gas & electricCarrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York and more, as an independent company.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
