What the visit actually involves
We start at the thermostat and confirm it is calling for heat the way it should, then move to the furnace itself. We pull the filter, look at the blower wheel and check the burners and heat exchanger for soot, rust or cracking. Ignition and flame sensor get cleaned and tested. We check the flue and combustion air path, look at the condensate drain on high-efficiency units, and read temperature rise across the exchanger to see whether airflow matches what the furnace was built for.
What we check and what we may replace
Filters, flame sensors and thermocouples are the common wear items, and we carry them. We inspect wiring and connections, test the limit and pressure switches, check blower amp draw, and look for duct leaks in vented crawlspaces where damp air and loose joints cost you heat. If we find a cracked heat exchanger or a failed safety, we shut the unit down and explain the options plainly. We never leave a combustion problem running so you can get through one more week.
How we decide a tune-up is the right call
If your furnace heats but does it noisily, unevenly, or with short cycles, a tune-up usually finds the reason. If it is not lighting at all, or you hear a bang on startup, that is a repair visit and we say so upfront. Systems past fifteen years with recurring failures may be better served by a replacement conversation than another cleaning. How often should a furnace be tuned up?
Once a year, ideally in early fall before the first cold snap. Annual attention catches a dirty flame sensor or a clogged condensate drain before it shuts you down on a Sunday night.
Can I do any of this myself?
You can change the filter, check thermostat batteries and settings, confirm no breaker has tripped, and make sure supply vents are open. Anything involving gas, burners or high voltage should wait for us.
Does a tune-up help with a furnace that smells dusty?
Usually yes. That first-burn smell is dust cooking off the heat exchanger and burners, and cleaning cuts it down. If the smell lingers or smells like gas, leave and call the gas utility first.
