What the job involves
Zoning starts with the ductwork, not the thermostat. We map which trunk lines and branches feed which rooms, then decide where a damper can cleanly separate one area from another. Motorized dampers go in the accessible duct, a zone panel ties them to the air handler or furnace, and each zone gets its own thermostat or sensor. In older homes with ducts in vented crawlspaces we often seal and support the runs first, because leaky duct will undo any zoning we add. Most installs take a day or two.
What we check and install
We check static pressure, blower capability and total system airflow, since closing off a zone raises pressure on everything that stays open. If the equipment is single-stage with no bypass or variable-speed blower, we plan for that. We look at existing thermostat wiring, transformer load and whether the panel can handle the zone count you want. Then we install dampers, the zone control panel, thermostats in each area and any needed bypass or barometric relief so the system is not fighting itself all season.
How we decide zoning is the right call
Zoning fixes a distribution problem, so we first rule out the cheaper causes. A crushed flex run, a disconnected boot in the crawlspace, a badly undersized return or a filter choking airflow will all mimic a zoning problem, and we would rather repair those. If duct is sound and the temperature split is really about sun load, ceiling height or a second floor, zoning earns its keep. When ductwork is beyond helping, we will say so and talk about a ductless head for the problem room instead.

Will zoning let me shut off rooms I never use?
Partly. You can set an unused zone back, but we do not fully close off large portions of a system. Airflow has to go somewhere, and starving the blower causes freezing coils and short cycling.
Can I zone the system I already have?
Often yes, if the ductwork is accessible and the blower has enough capability. We measure static pressure first. Single-stage equipment can be zoned with proper relief, though variable-speed handles it more gracefully.
Do I need a thermostat in every zone?
Each zone needs its own control or remote sensor, since that is what tells the panel to open or close the damper. Two-zone and three-zone layouts cover most homes we see across the region.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the form and describe what changed. Warm air, short cycling, a smell, water near the indoor unit. Details like that help us load the right parts before we leave.
- Step 2
We diagnose the whole system
We check the thermostat, the indoor unit, the outdoor unit and the ductwork, including runs in crawlspaces where damp air and loose joints quietly cause weak airflow and long run times.
- Step 3
You approve the fix
We explain what failed, what it takes to repair it, and what we would watch next season. Nothing gets replaced without your yes, and we clean up before we leave.

Why homeowners call us
- Humidity is our home groundMuggy summers and damp shoulder seasons drive most of the calls we take. We look at moisture and airflow together, not the cooling number alone, because a clammy house often means a sizing or duct problem.
- Crawlspace ducts get checkedOlder homes across the region run supply ducts through vented crawlspaces. Crushed flex, disconnected boots and soaked insulation show up constantly, and we get under the house to look instead of guessing from the register.
- Heating and cooling bothSame crew for air conditioning repair in July and heating repair in January. We know how your furnace, heat pump and air handler share ducts and a blower, so one visit covers the whole system.
- Plain talk on repair or replaceWhen a repair makes sense, we repair it. When a system is failing in ways that will keep costing you, we say so and explain why, then leave the decision with you and your timeline.

- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
