The thermostat installation symptoms we hear most
- The screen is completely blank Dead batteries, tripped breaker, blown low-voltage fuse or a failed control board
- I set 70 and the house sits at 76 Bad temperature sensor, poor thermostat location or a control not calling the equipment
- The system short cycles on and off every few minutes Thermostat cycle settings, sensor drift or a wiring fault at the stat
- Upstairs bakes while downstairs freezes Single-zone control on a two-level home, or failed zone dampers and a zone panel
- My new smart thermostat keeps losing power or dropping offline Missing common wire, undersized wiring or a power-stealing setup the equipment cannot support

Safe things to check first
Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.
- 1Change the thermostat batteries if it takes them, and check the screen comes back to life.
- 2Confirm the thermostat is set to heat or cool as you intend and the temperature target is past the room reading.
- 3Look at the breaker panel for a tripped breaker on the heating or cooling circuit and reset it once.
- 4Put in a clean filter and open the supply vents in the rooms that feel worst, since airflow problems often get blamed on the thermostat.

Can any smart thermostat work with my system?
Most can, but not all. Heat pumps with auxiliary heat, two-stage equipment and older systems without a common wire need the right control and sometimes added wiring. We check what your equipment calls for before we recommend a model.
What is a common wire and why does it matter?
The common wire, or C wire, gives the thermostat steady low-voltage power. Smart thermostats with screens and WiFi need it. If your wall only has four wires, we either pull a new one or fit an adapter at the equipment.
How long does a thermostat replacement take?
A straight swap on existing wiring is usually under an hour, including setup and a test run of heating and cooling. Adding a common wire, relocating the stat or setting up zoning controls takes longer and we will tell you before we start.
Will a new thermostat fix my hot and cold rooms?
Sometimes, but often not on its own. If one floor is always off, the cause is usually duct design, airflow or a lack of zoning. We measure what each area is getting and tell you honestly whether a control change will help.
What are zoning controls?
Zoning splits your ductwork into separate areas with motorized dampers and its own thermostat for each zone. It lets an upstairs bedroom call for cooling without overcooling the main floor. It works best on systems with the airflow capacity to handle it.
Can I keep my old thermostat when I replace the system?
Sometimes, but newer equipment often uses staging or communicating controls the old stat cannot speak to. We will check compatibility and let you know if keeping it limits what the new equipment can do.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the form and describe what changed. Warm air, short cycling, a smell, water near the indoor unit. Details like that help us load the right parts before we leave.
- Step 2
We diagnose the whole system
We check the thermostat, the indoor unit, the outdoor unit and the ductwork, including runs in crawlspaces where damp air and loose joints quietly cause weak airflow and long run times.
- Step 3
You approve the fix
We explain what failed, what it takes to repair it, and what we would watch next season. Nothing gets replaced without your yes, and we clean up before we leave.

Why homeowners call us
- Humidity is our home groundMuggy summers and damp shoulder seasons drive most of the calls we take. We look at moisture and airflow together, not the cooling number alone, because a clammy house often means a sizing or duct problem.
- Crawlspace ducts get checkedOlder homes across the region run supply ducts through vented crawlspaces. Crushed flex, disconnected boots and soaked insulation show up constantly, and we get under the house to look instead of guessing from the register.
- Heating and cooling bothSame crew for air conditioning repair in July and heating repair in January. We know how your furnace, heat pump and air handler share ducts and a blower, so one visit covers the whole system.
- Plain talk on repair or replaceWhen a repair makes sense, we repair it. When a system is failing in ways that will keep costing you, we say so and explain why, then leave the decision with you and your timeline.
