What the job involves
We start at the equipment, not the wall. A smart thermostat needs steady 24 volt power, so we confirm the transformer, the control board and the wire count coming from the air handler or furnace. Older homes in the region often have four or five conductors and no common wire, which is the usual reason a new thermostat cannot hold a charge. From there we mount the new unit level, terminate each conductor, set the system type, and test a full cycle in both heating and cooling before we leave.
What we check and set up
We verify heat pump versus conventional configuration, auxiliary and emergency heat staging, fan settings and any humidity control the thermostat supports. Damp shoulder seasons matter here, so if your equipment can run longer, lower cycles for moisture removal we set that up rather than leaving factory defaults. We check the outdoor sensor logic on heat pumps so backup heat does not lock in too early. Then we connect the thermostat to your home network, walk you through the schedule, and confirm remote access works on your phone.
How we decide it is the right call
A smart thermostat is a good move when your equipment is sound and your comfort problem is scheduling, humidity or uneven runtime. It is the wrong first step when rooms stay hot because ducts in a vented crawlspace are leaking or disconnected, or when a system short cycles from a refrigerant or airflow fault. We say so plainly. If we find a mechanical issue during the visit, we explain what we found, what it will take to correct, and let you decide the order of work.

Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump and backup heat?
Usually yes, but the thermostat has to be configured for heat pump operation with the correct auxiliary staging. Wired wrong, backup heat runs when it should not. We set and test that during installation.
My new thermostat has a blank screen. What now?
Check the breaker for your indoor unit and confirm the filter is not fully clogged, since some systems cut power on a safety. If the screen stays blank, the wiring or common wire is the likely cause. Call us.
Can you install a thermostat I already bought?
Yes. Bring it out of the box and we will confirm it matches your system type and wire count before mounting. If it is not compatible, we tell you which models will work with your equipment.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the form and describe what changed. Warm air, short cycling, a smell, water near the indoor unit. Details like that help us load the right parts before we leave.
- Step 2
We diagnose the whole system
We check the thermostat, the indoor unit, the outdoor unit and the ductwork, including runs in crawlspaces where damp air and loose joints quietly cause weak airflow and long run times.
- Step 3
You approve the fix
We explain what failed, what it takes to repair it, and what we would watch next season. Nothing gets replaced without your yes, and we clean up before we leave.

Why homeowners call us
- Humidity is our home groundMuggy summers and damp shoulder seasons drive most of the calls we take. We look at moisture and airflow together, not the cooling number alone, because a clammy house often means a sizing or duct problem.
- Crawlspace ducts get checkedOlder homes across the region run supply ducts through vented crawlspaces. Crushed flex, disconnected boots and soaked insulation show up constantly, and we get under the house to look instead of guessing from the register.
- Heating and cooling bothSame crew for air conditioning repair in July and heating repair in January. We know how your furnace, heat pump and air handler share ducts and a blower, so one visit covers the whole system.
- Plain talk on repair or replaceWhen a repair makes sense, we repair it. When a system is failing in ways that will keep costing you, we say so and explain why, then leave the decision with you and your timeline.
- All major brands, gas & electricCarrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York and more, as an independent company.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
