What the job involves
A UV installation means opening the air handler, finding a mounting point where the lamp actually sees the coil surface, and running a small power supply safely inside the cabinet. Ventilation work is different. We size a fresh air intake or a balanced ventilator to the house, then duct it so the incoming air is filtered and tempered rather than dumped raw into a hallway. Both jobs usually take part of a day. We test airflow before and after so we know we have not choked the system down.
What we check or install
We start with the coil and the drain pan, because that is where growth begins in humid weather. We look at filter condition, return leakage, and whether ducts run through a vented crawlspace where they pick up damp air. Then we check static pressure and how long the system runs on a typical afternoon. Depending on findings we may fit a coil-facing UV lamp, an in-duct air-cleaning unit, a fresh air intake with a motorized damper, or an energy recovery ventilator with its own filtration.
How we decide it is the right call
UV lights help most when the coil keeps fouling and the smell returns every cooling season. They do very little for dust or pollen, and we will say so. Ventilation makes sense in a tighter house where humidity stays high, or where cooking and bathing odors linger for hours. If the real problem is a crawlspace duct leak, a plugged condensate line, or a system that short cycles, we fix that first. Adding equipment to a system with an airflow problem just moves the complaint around.

Do UV lights replace my filter?
No. A UV lamp treats the coil surface and the air passing close to it. Particles like dust, dander and pollen still need a properly sized filter with good sealing, and the filter still needs changing on schedule.
How often does a UV bulb need replacing?
Most lamps lose useful output after about a year even though they still glow. We note the install date and check output at maintenance visits, then swap the bulb when it drops off rather than guessing by appearance.
Will adding ventilation make my house harder to cool?
Not if it is sized and ducted correctly. We calculate the fresh air amount for your home and often use a damper or recovery ventilator so incoming humid air is tempered before it reaches your living space.
