Homeowners' pick for heating and cooling across Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic

Duct Sealing

Duct sealing closes the leaks in your duct system so the air you paid to cool or heat actually reaches your rooms. We do this work in homes across Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, the Carolinas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Washington DC. You likely need it if some rooms never catch up, the system runs long cycles, the crawlspace side of the house feels damp, or dust keeps returning after every filter change. Call us and we will inspect the runs, joints and returns, then tell you what is actually leaking.

HVAC technician at work

Whether you call it duct sealing or air duct repair, the work is identical and so is the quote you approve first.

What the job involves

We start at the equipment and work outward, checking plenums, takeoffs, boots, joints and return connections. Leaks get sealed with mastic and mesh at the seams, and metal-backed tape where mastic will not hold. Boots at floor and ceiling registers get sealed to the surrounding framing, since that gap often pulls damp crawlspace air straight into the room. Loose collars are refastened before sealing. Where insulation was pulled back or crushed, we reinsulate so the sealed duct does not sweat in humid weather.

What we check or install

We look at static pressure, register airflow room by room, and the condition of flex runs that sag or kink between joists. Crushed sections get replaced rather than sealed, because sealing a pinched duct fixes nothing. We check that returns are sized and connected, not just drawing air from a framed cavity. If the crawlspace is damp, we note vapor and insulation issues that will undo the work. Then we seal, reinsulate, support sagging runs and recheck airflow before we leave.

How we decide it is the right call

Sealing is the right call when the equipment tests out fine but delivery is poor. Long runtimes, one hot bedroom over an unconditioned space, humidity that will not come down in shoulder season and dust that returns fast all point at leakage. If the ductwork is collapsed, undersized or badly routed, we say so instead of taping over it. We will also tell you when a filter, a stuck damper or a thermostat setting explains the complaint and sealing would be wasted money.

Duct Sealing — quick answers

Will duct sealing help with summer humidity?

Often yes. Leaky returns and unsealed boots pull humid air from vented crawlspaces into the airstream, so the system fights moisture it should never have seen. Sealing those leaks lets it dehumidify the house instead.

How long does duct sealing take?

Most homes take part of a day to a full day, depending on crawlspace access, how many runs there are and whether any crushed sections need replacing. We give you a scope after the inspection, before work starts.

Can I just use duct tape myself?

Cloth duct tape dries out and falls off within a season or two. Proper sealing uses mastic and mesh at the joints plus reinsulation, and it needs access to boots and takeoffs most homeowners cannot reach safely.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the form and describe what changed. Warm air, short cycling, a smell, water near the indoor unit. Details like that help us load the right parts before we leave.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose the whole system

We check the thermostat, the indoor unit, the outdoor unit and the ductwork, including runs in crawlspaces where damp air and loose joints quietly cause weak airflow and long run times.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the fix

We explain what failed, what it takes to repair it, and what we would watch next season. Nothing gets replaced without your yes, and we clean up before we leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Humidity is our home groundMuggy summers and damp shoulder seasons drive most of the calls we take. We look at moisture and airflow together, not the cooling number alone, because a clammy house often means a sizing or duct problem.
  • Crawlspace ducts get checkedOlder homes across the region run supply ducts through vented crawlspaces. Crushed flex, disconnected boots and soaked insulation show up constantly, and we get under the house to look instead of guessing from the register.
  • Heating and cooling bothSame crew for air conditioning repair in July and heating repair in January. We know how your furnace, heat pump and air handler share ducts and a blower, so one visit covers the whole system.
  • Plain talk on repair or replaceWhen a repair makes sense, we repair it. When a system is failing in ways that will keep costing you, we say so and explain why, then leave the decision with you and your timeline.
  • All major brands, gas & electricCarrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York and more, as an independent company.
  • Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
