First: The Two Smells That Mean Leave Now
If you smell gas, rotten eggs or sulfur, or if anyone in the house has a headache, nausea or dizziness that eases outdoors, do this in order. 1) Get everyone outside, including pets. 2) Do not flip switches, do not use the thermostat, do not open the garage door with the opener. 3) From outside, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line. 4) Stay out until they clear the house. 5) Then call us and we will handle the heating repair once the building is safe. A carbon monoxide alarm sounding gets the same response. Treat it as real every time, even if the smell fades.
What NOT to Do While You Sort It Out
Do not open the furnace cabinet or the blower door. Do not relight a pilot, tap on a burner, or spray anything into the unit. Do not tape over a smell, run the fan to blow it out of the house, or keep cycling the system to see if it clears. Do not touch wiring, capacitors or the disconnect at the outdoor unit. Gas, refrigerant and high voltage are all live inside that cabinet, and a burning smell often means something already failed. If the smell is sharp, electrical, plastic or like hot metal, shut the system off at the thermostat and leave it off until someone looks at it.
The Ordinary Explanation: First-Heat Dust
Most burning smells on the first cold night are dust. Fine grit settles on the heat exchanger and the burner area over the summer, then bakes off when the furnace fires. It smells scorched and a little sweet, it is faint, and it fades within fifteen to thirty minutes of runtime. That one you can live with. Open a couple of windows, let the system run, and change the filter if it looks loaded. A clogged filter starves airflow and makes the whole cabinet run hotter than it should. If the smell is still there on day two, or it comes back every cycle, it is no longer dust.
Smells That Point at a Real Fault
Hot plastic or fishy ozone usually means overheating wiring, a failing blower motor or a scorched control board. Burning rubber points at a slipping belt or a seized motor bearing. A metallic, hot-iron smell with a rumbling burner can mean a cracked heat exchanger, which is the one that brings carbon monoxide into the conversation. Smoke, visible scorch marks at a register, or a breaker that trips when the heat calls all mean stop. In older homes across the region with ducts running through vented crawlspaces, we also find chewed wiring and rodent nests sitting against warm supply lines.
When to Call Us and What We Do
Call us when the smell lasts past the first half hour of heating season, returns on every cycle, smells electrical or like burning plastic, or comes with a tripped breaker, soot or a sounding carbon monoxide alarm. On arrival we check the burner and heat exchanger, test the flame sensor and limit switches, read blower amp draw, inspect wiring and the control board for heat damage, and look at static pressure and filter condition since restricted airflow causes a lot of this. Sometimes it is a heater repair on the spot. Sometimes it is a duct or wiring problem in the crawlspace. We tell you which, plainly, before we touch anything.

How long should the first-heat dust smell last?
Usually fifteen to thirty minutes of runtime, and it should be gone by the second or third cycle. If you still smell it the next day, or it returns every time the furnace fires, have it looked at.
Can a dirty filter cause a burning smell?
Yes. A loaded filter chokes airflow, so the heat exchanger and blower motor run hotter than designed. That can smell scorched and can trip the high limit switch. Change the filter, then call us if it continues.
Do I need to leave the house for every burning smell?
No. Leave immediately for gas or sulfur odors, a sounding carbon monoxide alarm, smoke, or headaches and nausea that clear outside. For a faint dust smell on the first cold night, open windows and let it run.
