First: safety before troubleshooting
1. If you smell gas, even faintly, or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, leave the building immediately. Do not flip switches on the way out. 2. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility. 3. Once they have cleared the house, call us and we will look at the heating side. 4. If you see smoke, scorch marks around the panel, or you smell hot plastic or burning insulation, leave the breaker off and call us. Do not reset it. 5. If the panel itself is hot to the touch or buzzing, treat that as an electrical emergency and call an electrician or your power company. A breaker that trips is doing its job. It is protecting wire from heat.
What not to do
Do not keep resetting the breaker over and over. Each reset sends full current back into whatever is faulting, and repeated resets are how a bad compressor winding turns into melted wire. Do not tape or wedge a breaker in the on position. Do not swap in a larger breaker to make the tripping stop, because the breaker is sized to the wire, not to the equipment. Do not open the outdoor disconnect or the blower compartment to look for a burned wire. Do not touch capacitors, contactors, or refrigerant lines. Do not run the system on a hunch to see if it holds this time.
The safe checks you can do yourself
There are a few things worth confirming before you call. Check your thermostat batteries and settings, because a thermostat cycling the system on and off rapidly puts hard starts on the equipment. Change the filter if it is grey and packed, since a starved blower pulls more current and runs hot. Walk out to the outdoor unit and clear leaves, grass clippings, mulch, and anything stacked against the coil, leaving room on all sides. Confirm supply and return vents inside are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs. Then stop. If the breaker still trips, the cause is inside the equipment.
What usually causes it
Across the region, the common ones we find are a failing capacitor, a compressor drawing high amps on startup, a shorted contactor, a seized condenser fan motor, or a blower motor pulling too much because the wheel is loaded with dirt. On homes with ducts in vented crawlspaces, moisture is a real factor. Damp shoulder seasons corrode low voltage connections and rot wire insulation where it rubs a metal panel edge, and that shows up as an intermittent short. A tired breaker in a panel that has tripped hundreds of times also gets weak and trips early. Sorting which one it is takes meter readings under load.
When to call us
Call us when the breaker trips more than once, when it trips the instant the system starts, or when it trips only on the hottest part of the afternoon. We serve homeowners in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Washington DC, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, and we handle both AC repair and heater repair on the same visit. Tell us what you noticed: whether it was the cooling or the heating, how long it ran, and any sound or smell. Leave the breaker off until we get there. If the panel is warm, buzzing, or smells hot, an electrician needs to see the panel before we touch the HVAC equipment.

HVAC Keeps Blowing the Breaker — straight answers
Is it safe to reset the breaker once?
One reset is reasonable if nothing smells hot and the panel looks and feels normal. If it trips again, leave it off and call us. Repeated resets push current into a faulting part and turn a small repair into a bigger one.
Can a dirty filter really trip a breaker?
It can contribute. A clogged filter makes the blower work harder and run hotter, which raises the current it draws. It is rarely the whole story, but changing the filter is a free check worth doing before we arrive.
Why does it only trip on hot afternoons?
Heat raises the load on the compressor and lowers the margin a weak part has left. A tired capacitor or a compressor with high starting amps will hold on a mild morning and fail once outdoor temperatures climb.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the form and describe what changed. Warm air, short cycling, a smell, water near the indoor unit. Details like that help us load the right parts before we leave.
- Step 2
We diagnose the whole system
We check the thermostat, the indoor unit, the outdoor unit and the ductwork, including runs in crawlspaces where damp air and loose joints quietly cause weak airflow and long run times.
- Step 3
You approve the fix
We explain what failed, what it takes to repair it, and what we would watch next season. Nothing gets replaced without your yes, and we clean up before we leave.

Why homeowners call us
- Humidity is our home groundMuggy summers and damp shoulder seasons drive most of the calls we take. We look at moisture and airflow together, not the cooling number alone, because a clammy house often means a sizing or duct problem.
- Crawlspace ducts get checkedOlder homes across the region run supply ducts through vented crawlspaces. Crushed flex, disconnected boots and soaked insulation show up constantly, and we get under the house to look instead of guessing from the register.
- Heating and cooling bothSame crew for air conditioning repair in July and heating repair in January. We know how your furnace, heat pump and air handler share ducts and a blower, so one visit covers the whole system.
- Plain talk on repair or replaceWhen a repair makes sense, we repair it. When a system is failing in ways that will keep costing you, we say so and explain why, then leave the decision with you and your timeline.
- All major brands, gas & electricCarrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York and more, as an independent company.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
