What Our Summers Actually Do To A Cooling System

Across the region, the load on your AC is as much about moisture as heat. A system running in 88 degree air with high humidity spends a big share of its capacity just pulling water out of the house, and that shows up as long run times and a unit that never seems to catch up. Homes with ducts in vented crawlspaces have it harder. Damp air sits under the floor, insulation sags, and cooled air picks up heat and moisture before it reaches a register. Shoulder seasons are sneaky too. Mild damp days mean short run cycles that never dehumidify, so the house feels clammy at 74 degrees.

Which Failures Spike, And When

Early season calls cluster around capacitors and contactors. A weak capacitor limps through a cool spring and quits the first afternoon the compressor has to work. Late spring brings frozen coils, usually from a filter nobody changed since fall or from low refrigerant that leaked slowly over winter. By July we see condensate problems: clogged drain lines, full pans, water staining a ceiling below the air handler. Blower motors and control boards tend to fail mid-season, after weeks of continuous running. Systems past fifteen years old show most of this at once, because the parts aged together. The Checks Worth Doing Yourself

Start with the filter. If you cannot read the date on it, replace it and write the new date on the frame. Next, go outside and clear a good two feet around the condenser. Grass clippings, mulch, cottonwood fluff and leaf litter all choke airflow across the coil. Walk the house and confirm supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs. Check thermostat batteries and confirm it is set to cool with a reasonable setpoint. Look at your electrical panel for a tripped breaker. That is the full list. Anything involving refrigerant, gas or high voltage is ours to handle, not yours.

Signs You Should Call Before The Heat Arrives

Run the system for twenty minutes on a mild day and pay attention. Air out of the registers should feel noticeably cold, not just moving. If the outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spin, shut it off and call us. Same if you hear a hard click and nothing follows. Water around the indoor unit, a musty smell when the blower starts, ice on the refrigerant line, or a breaker that trips more than once all mean the system needs eyes on it. Rooms that were fine two summers ago and stuffy now usually point at duct problems, not the equipment itself.

What A Pre-Season Visit Covers

We measure rather than guess. That means checking refrigerant pressures and temperature split, reading amp draw on the compressor and blower, testing capacitors against their rated values, and inspecting the contactor for pitting. We clear and flush the condensate drain, check the safety switch on the pan, and clean the outdoor coil if it is loaded with debris. In crawlspace homes we look at duct connections and insulation, because a disconnected boot under the floor wastes more cooling than most equipment problems. April through mid May works best. The weather is mild, schedules are open, and you have time to order parts if something needs replacing. Waiting until the first hot week means competing with everyone whose system already quit.

My AC cools but the house feels damp. Is that a repair?

Often yes. Short cycling, oversized equipment or leaky crawlspace ducts all leave humidity behind. We measure indoor humidity and run times to find the cause, since more cooling capacity usually makes damp worse, not better.

Does changing the filter really matter that much?

It does. A loaded filter starves airflow across the indoor coil, which drops capacity and can freeze the coil solid. Once it ices, cooling stops entirely. A dated filter changed on schedule prevents a large share of summer calls.
